How to execute my code when I get a new message in Gmail?

I want to make simple server that will execute some code when a new message arrives to my Gmail account, so I am going to use Gmail API. Is there a better way to build a system to react to the message (execute some code, if it arrives) than just getting list of messages, for example, every minute?
