Default: ensuring autocomplete is correct on the user's browser?

How do I be sure that when a user browses to my site and signs up, her username is saved rather than her phone number or email address? Are there default textfield names that work better with browsers, or should I use custom JS: can someone direct me to a library, iff JS?
