Starting Web Api

I have worked as a mainframe developer for a long time and I now have an opportunity to work on Web Api. I would like to know from all the experts here, what should one know before starting web api.

I have just started learning C# and some of my collegues here tell me that I should also know MVC and WCF before I can start learning Web Api?
