How to make a Pos style web app

Im new to web development as I started programming on Visual Basic.I actually began coding cause I always used to love the idea of creating system for storing information.I eventually created a system for my family business in which it stored our employee job reports and it made payroll extremely fast and very conventional.It used your typical datagrids used in VB,so thats what I would like create a similar style web app.What would I need to start developing this app?I have been learning ruby on rails lately and would like to know how I come to make this...Is there a special framework for creating this?Is rails good for this?Are there special datagrids out there that or practical for this project?Do I have to use AJAX technology for this?Any suggestion will help!Thanks!!!
