Angular: ng-animate: final status of slider is flashing before animation starts

I am using the ng-animate feature of angular to slide a menu in. The animation is working correctly but for some reason the final status of the menu flashes before the animation begins. The menu shows in it's final state for a fraction of a second and then dissapears and begins to slide in from the side of the screen.
