Django vs. Other Development Platforms

So, first time for developing an interactive web site and I picked Django as the development engine. In truth, I'm finding it to be a quite a slog - it seems like every time I do try to do something there is some just something a little wrong (currently getting a sql null exception with a date field even though I'm setting the date). Am I barking up the wrong tree? Have people started with this framework and then found others to be a bit more... "helpful". Currently quite familiar with the C#, Winforms world and things seems to be a little more straightforward.
