I joined a project in which a web application product (SaaS) is maintained. It manages repeat payments to payees. Now there are a set of actions: request an off-cycle payment, show payment history, show tax form, request a stop, request a reissue. Currently all these actions are shown as buttons. I don't believe all of these should be buttons and it gets ugly. How could it be set up?
I have tried to find design solutions e.g. in books like designing web navigation (Kalbach) or web forms (wroblewski), and also googled for design solutions.
A secondary navigation below the primary horizontal navigation does not sound right. Also a menu that pops up on mouse over does not appear to be right. Perhaps a navigation bar on the left/right sight could contain all these "functions". However, it says 'navigation' and not action list. Can I mix these?
To state the obvious, I am not a UX guy (but PM) and there is no UX person on the team - nor can I get currently funding for it.
