CSS or CodeBehind method to change CheckBoxList item background color

Here is my checkboxlist with multiple styles applied to it. The RED comes from CHK.backcolor. The GREEN comes from CHK.Items[n].Attributes.Add("Style", "background-color:green;"); The BLUE-rish comes from my site menu style where I have .menu li a {...background-color:#4e8cbb;...} My goal is to change THAT BLUE-rish color to my gridview background (PaleGoldenRod). The RED and GREEN colors I added for testing purposed to see how these properties affect the control painting. This said I realize THERE IS ANOTHER OBJECT that does painting from "li a" instruction (the BLUE-rish rectangle). I wonder what is that and how I can change it, access it?
