Number of sockets opened by Nginx to the Apache server

The scenario is the following: The Apache service stands behind an Nginx reverse proxy.

Say 1000 clients access the website from the outside, Nginx opens 1000 sockets for them.

What about beetween the Nginx and the Apache service? Are there also 1000 sockets, or only one socket is used and the requests are somehow serialized?
