Scanning a document into a web browser

I'm building a web application that requires document scanning. Does anybody know of a way to trigger the scan from the scanner and then receive that document in the browser? All the products I can find require the user to trigger the scan from the browser, but I'm wondering if there's a way for the browser to 'listen' for an incoming scan then receive that document. Any advice? Thanks
