Is ajax is reliable to develop user to user chat system?

I am new to web technology and i want to know is ajax is good to build a user chat system (Where user can chat with each other just like an messenger) will it slow down the server? if yes? what will be a better technology for implementing it or if not what you people suggest how to implement that.
