Why are movie subtitles on the Internet nearly always in zip format?

I have noticed that every website that hosts subtitles for movies provides the subtitle files in a zip format. Is there any significant disadvantage to providing the .srt files as is? If done, this would improve the user experience significantly and it surprises me that not a single website (that I have come across) has done this.
