How do I add functionality to GitHub?

I want to do something very similar to what ZenHub does in GitHub but I have no idea where to start. Could someone tell me:

• What doing this action is called? (mainly so I can Google the right things because an hour of trying left me exactly where I started...)
• Some of the tools that I will need.
• Where can I find general documentation.
