Building websites in Rails - is Javascript necessary?

I need to make my websites interactive. Can I use Ruby for this by compiling it to Javascript using something like Opal, or would something like Coffeescript suit my purpose better? I'd like to know if this will cause problems. Is it worth just learning Javascript, or will using one of the above methods not cause any problems?
