How do I become a web developer and general job advice? [on hold]

I'd really like to get started with web development and was considering applying for some junior web developer roles...but without a portfolio am I likely to get my CV binned before I even get started?

As a bit of background, I graduated about 10 yrs ago with good hons degree in Computer science where I studied a bit of javascript, php etc, made a website with its own basic CMS using PHP and MySQL as my final yr project.

Since then I've worked at software dev companies as a tech author and now moved on to a more corporate role. I still get to dabble with javascript and a bit of jquery....

I've come to conclusion however that I'm happiest when I'm playing around with code and I can probably now in position I can just about to afford changing my career and starting over again....

I don't even know where to start though. Things have moved on so much...would my skills be enough to get me started in an entry level role or do I need to take some training courses? There's loads of web tutorials but which ones do I even start with...do people even hand code websites anymore or is it all CMS driven?

I'm not good with graphics design - I can use programmes like Photoshop but I'm no artist. I'm not really interested in graphics or web design, it's the development I'd like to get into.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks
