Is there a way I can send a ping to a website and display the response?

I am trying to make a website which will ping a URL, and then display the results of the ping. This is a simple status website I am working on. How would I go about having a URL set in the site files, and then a ping is sent to that URL from the website visitors browser, and then the ping response results are shown on the web page.

(I'm new to programming so please just bear with me :) )
