How does webUSB work

I work at an software company and our CTO saw some article about chrome and webUSB. Well we have lots of in house applications that use scanners, printers, usb creditcard processors and he wants us to try create a "web" version one of our products because he thinks webUSB will let us access any usb connected device. I can't find much help or if that webUSB is even supposed to be used in that way.

I'm just trying to find out if it's possible to surf to a website that we've made and access a usb scanner or printer (we haven't written the drivers or anything, it's whatever the device installed). Some of the things I saw while searching was that the hardware developer would write a driver that worked with webUSB, or that you have to replace the devices current driver with webUSB or you have to install webUSB.sys?

Idk, just looking for some help to get pointed in the direction to make something like our CTO wants if it's possible.
