Ideas for Github Open Source Beginner

I'm getting started with contributing to Open Source projects in GitHub and would like some suggestions as to what kind of projects would be good to work on for a beginner. I'm a Java/JavaScript programmer, but am comfortable getting started with Python projects as well.

I'm really confused as to what projects to select, and would like suggestions on this (keyword search suggestions also welcome).
