Custom Error-500 page does not work

Under my domain folder, I created a .htaccess file, which contains the following code: ErrorDocument 404 /404.html ErrorDocument 500 /500.html

The 404 page worked, but the 500 page did not work, does anyone know why? If you want more information, please let me know :)
