Expanding carousel HTML CSS

I am trying to recreate something along the lines of this expanding carousel from http://www.nytimes.com/newsgraphics/2013/09/13/fashion-week-editors-picks/index.html

I haven't found any good examples of similar ideas anywhere else.

The problem I ran to into trying to see how it works is that, the way it was constructed originally it was made with a single image which is then somehow manipulated by D3.

Instead of that I want to have x amount of individual images like these: https://s.put.re/ebt4N5F9.jpg https://s.put.re/b1JEEGKX.jpg https://s.put.re/MJfYvLQ8.jpg etc. for lets say up to 100 individual images. With the same carousel effect and the little identifier of specif image groups under, like these:
