How to communicate between server side and front end javascript? (nodejs, jquery, expressjs)

I currently have a form that takes in 2 inputs and am using a post request to deliver it to my nodejs file. Now, I want the page to show an error if the two inputs are the same. I can do the checking in node, but how do I communicate to jquery to show the hidden error message? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!
