Creating Custom Web App in Oracle CRM on Demand - Edit Variable

I am creating a web app within CRM On Demand. However, I need to modify one of the text field variables before referencing it.

For example, if the variable %%%User_Id%%% has the format "123456-1", is it possible to modify it to only keep the numbers before the dash before passing the variable?
