Creating a commercial product that connects to the web

Lets say I want to create a commercial product that can be installed in a home and connected to WiFi, and can send and revive data over the internet, for example, an led light that can send data about brightness to a smartphone or a web server, and can be controlled using a smartphone.(or multiple smartphones) How would I go about doing that? (The sending and receiving data part).
