$_Session vs MySQL (via PDO) Performance

Assuming 0 latency between server and database - how would performance compare between reading/writing from/to the database vs reading/writing from/to the PHP $_SESSION global array. How would the answer change between a small DB Table with 100 rows vs one with 50,000 rows (lets say it has 1 table)?
