How should I go about implementing an ActivityPub protocol in Python?

My goal is to implement an ActivityPub protocol in Python.

I have never done anything like this before, so I am looking for some general high-level advice on how to go about doing this. What is the process here? Where should I start? Where can I learn about how to do this sort of thing?
