Looking for good virtual machine to host a portfolio site and a seperate blog site

I am currently a student and need to host a portfolio, my wife wants to start a blog, and I would like some advice on which VPS or VM to go with. I have some experience with digital ocean, but I'm not sure if there are cheaper options or better services out there. Also, what level of service would we need? I am a student so money is tight, so I'm hoping around $5 a month would be good enough. Any advice would be great!
