Can WebSocket receive messages retroactively (like Message queue)

I wonder if it possible to get WebSocket (WS) messages sent from the Server prior Client establishing WS connection? For example, before Client connected to the WS, Server has sent a couple of notifications about status of some background task. Is it possible from the Client code to get those task status notifications retroactively?
