How to learn programming correctly, how to choose programming direction

i'm in the second year of university, my speciality is called "Automated control systems", and i ran into a two problems, the first thing I can't understand how to learn programming, the second thing I can't understand which programming direction to choose, i'm just confused and at a standstill, please help advice.
