.htaccess absolute urls to relative urls

I am trying to test a live site on a local machine

All the resources have relative urls e.g. /css/.. this works fine on the remote server but on the local machine it tries to access http://local/css where it needs to access http://local/site/css

Every .htacess rule I have tried doesn't seem to work, any ideas?
