Trying to remove .html extensions from mobile subdirectory

I am building a mobile version of our website under the folder (root)/mobile2016 and am trying to use .htaccess to remove the extensions from the pages in this directory. Our full site is run on a CMS which operates from another directory, but the pages in /mobile2016 are simply HTML that I wrote. There is also an existing .htaccess file in the root dir.
