How to save formatted Text in database that will be shared for mobile and native apps?

I have a CMS with a text editor. The text input should be used both in web (html) and in a native app. the text editor should allow some formatting such as bold, italics underlining etc.

Should the input be saved as html or with a meta language (like Markdown)? What is the state of the art technique to solve this problem?
