Does the google maps API have any way of finding destinations along a route?

I want to create a webapp. I have been programming for a few years, but haven't done too much web development outside of a little html, javascript and css. But I had an idea for a small project that I'd like to try. I simply want to be able to input a destination and starting location and have it tell me all of the McDonalds stores along the route, but I just do not know where to start. Can anybody point me towards some relevant concepts, documentation or even similar websites and projects I can scour through? Thanks :D
