How are data structures hosted?

I have a confusion regarding the use of data structure.

We know that LinkedIn uses graphs to tell the +n connection. DNS uses tree data structures. But how are these data structures hosted? If I create a small social graph on my PC, it would work fine and be there until I turn off my computer. Now I need to recreate the graph on restart.

Do web servers and distributed servers do the same thing?
