All web applications could be done by implementing and API and a front-end with a library like React?

I am starting in web development and so far in most web applications I have seen, after the server send the HTML and Javascript files implementing the application, the rest of the functioning consist of the interchange of JSON between the front-end and some REST API. All web applications could be developed using this pattern? are there better software design patterns to do this?
