What languages need to learn to create open cart extensions?

I want to create open cart extensions/modules like a module to create a gift for the new customer, a module to automatically create coupon code if purchases more than Rs.1000, referral code generator module, etc. But I don't know what languages and platforms I have to learn for that. Can anyone tell me the way to learn that?
