why do we need to specify port number while using http protocol

why do we need to specify port number with IP address even if we are using http protocol? for ex- http://xyz:8080...what does this even means? we already know that anyways while using http,the request will be served at port 80 then why do we specify port explicitly?
please bear me with this stupid question.
