how to use pure api rails to communicate whether user have authenticated?

I recently started building front end apps.

before I can use .erb to display dynamic sign in vs log out forms.

Now I am using front end javascript to build out the ui. What's the best way to have the front end ask rails if user have authenticated?

And I need this behavior on reloads.
