Combine if-query with allocation

Is it possible to combine the allocation into the if-query and should that be done?

$textxPos = $xPos + $fieldData["coordinates"]["x"] / $divisor;
if ($textxPos < 0) {
  ..
}

like so:

if ($link['value'] = trim($link['value'])) {
  ..
}
