Techniques from uploading files?

I am a newbee to web technique. I am currently doing a JEE project which will require file upload functionality. I use the common-file jar to implement it already, but I want to know how to show the file name as a list next to the browse button, so every time I click on the browse button the list refreshes. What are some techniques that are used here?

And aside from JEE, what other techniques or frameworks are usually used to implement this functionality in the industry?
