Is web scraping bad?

I'm working on a class project and my teacher told me if we make an app we will all get an A on the assignment. However, I have been struggling with finding good APIs for customer data and I don't want to fake it. So I think I'm going to scrape the web. Is this just frowned upon or is it like considered evil/ illegal? Let me know what you think.
