Web development for beginners [on hold]

I want to learn something about web development. I'd say I'm an intermediate PC user (have only ever used Windows), but new to the world of web development. So I thought I'd give a try to teaching myself. Decided to go with online courses from Lynda.com. A friend said to me - don't just go for front end or back end, cos nowadays they are both done by the same person. OK, I said. Then he advised me to first get basic knowledge of C#, then HTML and CSS and then learn JavaScript. Any comments on that?

So far I see that JavaScript is quite hot so that's why I though I'd go for learning that language for now.
