How notifications are pushed on websites like Facebook or Quora?

I want to implement chat facility on my website and android/ios app . So what is the ideal solution for push notification to be implemented on desktop website and android/ios app platform . I can use Polling for desktop website and respective native push methods for android/ios platforms . But is there some better way to do it especially for Desktop website ? Also i am trying to avoid any extra XMPP server .
