How the response from the server is identified, and rendered if my request is of images or Videos?

I was reading how the request and response works in web, suppose if we enter an URL in browser. I'm clear upto the response from the server. But my question is if server sends response in form of json or XML. If my request is form of video or image ? So what happens then ?? Could anyone help me out on this ?
