Browser-sync takes forever to reload, looking for ways to troubleshoot issue

I've search a lot on this issue. Many topics from this site. None have provided a solution to this problem.

I am using assemble to build panini pages and then having browser-sync reload the page. It is watch the index.html page which builds last according to the output. Yet it gets stuck. It says browser connected, but the browser just gets stuck in reload for a really long time. When the process if first started it works relatively quickly. As it goes on and if I accidentally save two things too quickly it chokes.
