How is Adaptive Web Design actually implemented?

Searching for Adaptive Web Design returns some results in Google, usually some comparisons to Responsive Web Design, but I wasn't lucky enough to actually find a tutorial that would show how AWD is implemented in practice.

So how does it Work? How does the server find out about the browser width and height and how does it return appropriate CSS? Any explanation or sample code could help. Thanks.
