What is the best way to setup a database for a scalable web store?

I am seeking to setup a web store for now and scalable in the future. What would be the best way to do this that would allow me to have growth with the store and not have to redesign the database as traffic increases. Are there any suggested methods to follow while doing this for a custom website? Is MySQL a viable solution? Or should I use something else and why?
