Any way to hide-prevent mac accent pop-up window?

Working on a project where the implementation prevents keypress listeners being added to the window - this cannot be changed.

Since I need to capture key presses, I've made an invisible text box as text boxes are the only permitted way to capture key press events. The issue is that when a OS X user holds down certain keys (a, s, e) an accent selection window pops up like this:

Is there way to prevent the Mac accent pop-up?
