How to make a site that updates live with user input?

I am new to web programming and wanted to make a website that would update to other users on the site live whenever someone interacted with it. An example of something similar what I am looking to be able to do would be a chess app that registers when someone makes a move. I didn't know what Javascript/PHP or other tools/languages that I would need to make this.
