automatic array to table or list grid layout in html

Is there a way to arrange an array of data into a table while having an automatic max number of columns or have a list layout in a grid method without the data overlapping and with borders in HTML? Like for instance you have 20 items in an array and you want to arrange the data in a grid layout without the data overlapping or maybe in a table with a max number of columns?
