Is it possible to use PHP scripting using a wordpress website?

I have to make a website and the person I'm making this for wants it done on a particular wordpress theme. I have experience in web developement and php scripting but not on wordpress. Can you actually code on wordpress or is it too "user-friendly" for that. Also, can I maybe get some tips on how to get upto speed with wordpress really quick?
